Caladium

I got my first caladium bulbs earlier this year and popped one into a nursery pot to see what would happen. I swear I waited forever and never thought it would sprout, but then all of a sudden I saw a couple little sprouts poking out of the soil. After that it seemed like it just started growing like crazy. The leaves are beautiful and huge. One of the leaves looked really weird though. It almost seemed like it was wound up too tight and wouldn’t open. Now I believe it may be a flower! I really want to buy some more of these bulbs because there’s different styles of them!

Quarantine, still.

So it is now May and we are still in quarantine. When I think about how often I stay home, it’s honestly not too different from how it normally is. I’m pretty good about having enough hobbies and things to do to keep me busy at home without ever getting bored. There is always something I could be doing.

One thing that has been driving me crazy is not being able to go to the gym. I’ve been taking workout classes, and there is a few dumbbells and a barbell. The barbell has 46 pounds on it and the clips to hold the plates on are kind of stuck on there. I’m sure they could come off, but it’s a little bit too much effort for me to want to mess around with. I’m just going to have to make it work until the gyms open up again.

I have been looking after my house plants and I do believe I am at my maximum capacity. I barely have any room, and I should also just really take care of what I have. There is an exception, I do want to buy some outdoor plants to decorate the yard. I have been thinking about roses.

I finally started planting some vegetables outside. Hopefully they will do really well with the new soil that I bought. Here are the seedlings I have…I’ve planted about half of them and I still have more to go.

I think I’m going to save up for a down payment on a car. I could use credit card, but I would rather just save the money and put some money down. My car has been a little bit sketchy as of recently. I took it in to get some work done, but it seems like my check engine light randomly turns on and I hate wondering if it’s something serious or if it’s just being sensitive and turning on for any stupid reason. I got a new tire today in the stupid light turned on when I started my car. That doesn’t even make any sense. I might just except having a car payment to get something newer that I don’t have to worry about for a long time to come. So that some thing I’m definitely going to be working towards.

Springtime plant situation

The weather earlier this year had indicted Spring weather would come early, but no. It started raining again on and off, and today is one of those days. I am horribly late at planting any seeds. I should have started in February, but I guess it’s not too late.

My Pothos plant is doing wonderfully. I remember when I first bought the mother plant a few years ago and thought I knew how to take care of a plant. I tried to propagate it, the mother plant died, and I was left with a few yellow vines, sitting in water filled vases. It was sad. I learned I had them in too much sun, so I finally pulled them away, reuniting the vines in dirt, and now it is beautiful.

My Monstera isn’t doing so great. It lost some leaves over the Winter and the two youngest ones in the plant still look young and soft. They aren’t darker and dense like the older leaves, and I don’t know if that’s good or not.

I was gifted a variegated corn plant (Dracaena) from a coworker but it seems the leaves have been turning brown. I’ve clipped the leaves and have tried moving it to different locations to see if the lighting situation made the plant happier. I haven’t checked it since I moved it to it’s current location and I should check it soon.

My variegated spider plant is doing well and growing a happy little runner. I’d like to use any new babies that grow to add to the main plant and make it more dense.

I am pleased to say my Monstera Adansonii is finally on its way. I bought a simple clipping a long time ago and it wouldn’t root until I got the right nodes in the water. That one clipping is now three separate pieces growing in this pot I painted, and two of the clippings have new growth!

Latest things

Well yesterday was my cats 16th birthday. I am completely blessed to have him in my life all these years. I haven’t lived with anyone this long, not even family. I feel like time has gone by so fast. He used to be a high strung brat but now he is a sweet, gentle cat.

I know he loves his scratching boards so I replaced his old ones. I also bought him a cat grass plant and watched him gnaw away at it.

I’ve been spending more time at the gym, trying to wait patiently for results. It will probably be a long wait. I’d really like the things I used to do, that I struggle with now, to become easier.

Last weekend we got some vegan nachos and we went to Green Acres Nursery and I lost my shit there. I wanted to spend all my money on plants.

I brought home this staghorn fern, which is a planet I have been wanting for a while. I also got some seeds and a bag of bulbs, but let’s see if they sprout before I get into detail.

Just a few plant updates

Here are a few images of what I have in my window and an Ogre Ear plant I have outside that is doing well. I have been trying to take cuttings from plants outside to grow new ones. I have a new spider plant baby growing, but I would like to obtain a variegated spider plant. My vegetable plants aren’t doing too great, some better than others. Nothing fantastic to share. The tomatoes are doing well and I haven’t seen a single tomatillo. I got more secondhand pots and have been trying to repot some plants that could use a little more space in their pots.

I finally have a Monstera Deliciosa! I wish I could say it’s going to grow big and get a lot of leaves, but there’s not much room for it. It’s in the brightest room of the house and has to be elevated so my cat does try to rub his gums on it and take bites! I had to put some bamboo sticks in it because the leaves were leaning too far to the sides. I love it, but I want it to thrive.

And then I have this stupid Monstera Andansonii that I got in March, put in water, and waited for it to root. Nothing. I waited a little longer and noticed the nodes at the bottom of the stems hadn’t changed a bit. After waiting more, I decided to stick it in soil, figuring that would make it grow faster. I started to pay attention to other plants so I wouldn’t be so impatient. A couple months went by and I said “Hmm” and gently pulled the plant out of the soil…only to see nothing! Matter of fact, the nodes seemed to have disappeared! I was about to throw the thing away, but decided to give the upper nodes a chance. I put it in water deep enough to reach the upper set of nodes, and the damn thing rooted! It’s even growing a new leaf! I am not sure how to plant it in soil now. Maybe I will have to plant it sideways or sacrifice the other leaf.

I threw a tiny arrowhead plant cutting in the glass with it for now.
